Beauty, Desire & Human Flourishing

  • Theological Horizons 1841 University Circle Charlottesville, VA 22903 (map)

We are honored to be partnering with our friends at Coracle to put on this event.

From Coracle:

As we in North America slowly emerge from the pandemic, many of us find ourselves plunged back into a pre-pandemic pace of life, even though we never fully recovered from the challenges of the last year and a half.  Now is the time to ask some important questions together that can shape and guide what our "Next Normal" becomes:

What should the role of beauty be, not only in our immediate context of sky-high anxiety levels, but also in the ongoing rhythms of our lives?

What role do our desires and longings play in making sure those rhythms lead to true flourishing?

How should a Christian view the connections between beauty, desire, and the rest of life?

As part of this year’s "Beauty for Ballast” Initiative, we’re delighted to host our friend, psychiatrist Dr. Curt Thompson, for our July Soundings Seminar to discuss themes of his forthcoming book "The Soul of Desire: Discovering the Neuroscience of Longing, Beauty, and Community”.  Rev. Bill Haley (Coracle Executive Director) will be Curt's conversation partner, and we would love you to bring your questions to the conversation as well!
