Charlottesville is filled with compassionate visionaries who are doing the good work of seeing and caring for those often neglected by those with power and influence. Our hope is that through the Scoper Lecture and our Welcome Table reception, you will meet someone you haven’t met before and that you will be inspired to boldly step out to serve and learn from one of our beautiful community partners if you aren’t already doing so.
Here is a list of community organizations where our Perkins Fellows have served or who we’ve partnered with and count as friends.
Bread & Roses C’ville is an outreach initiative rooted in the vibrant community of Trinity Episcopal Church. Since its inception in 2015, Bread & Roses has promoted food and ecological justice, while making a positive impact on the lives of those around us. To learn more and get involved, click here.
Equal Justice USA is a national organization that works to transform the justice system by promoting responses to violence that break cycles of trauma. We work at the intersection of criminal justice, public health, and racial justice to elevate healing over retribution, meet the needs of survivors, advance racial equity, and build community safety.
Casa Alma is a Catholic Worker community and all-volunteer non-profit located on .6 acres in a diverse neighborhood in the city of Charlottesville. We host a community house for resident volunteers and two houses of hospitality for homeless and low-income families. Our guests are typically African-American or Latina single parent families who live onsite for up to two years. Guests leverage a more stable future by paying down debt and saving funds for future housing. Christ Rooms are rooms in personal homes offered by community members. International Neighbors’ mission is to equip our refugee neighbors with the network and skills needed to move from surviving to thriving in Charlottesville. We realize this mission through our programs that are focused on four essential areas: Home, Health, Community, and Career. Of course, the needs of refugees who have fled their home countries are enormous. In many cases, our work with them from their arrival through achieving U.S. citizenship is all-encompassing and can’t fully be captured here. Kindness Cafe is a cafe located in the Brooks Family YMCA that employs folks with cognitive disabilities. They serve Grit coffee and are expanding to a second location at Common Grounds on Rugby Road. Please visit them for your next coffee! Monday – Friday: 8am-12pm & 2:30pm-6:30pm. Saturdays: 8am-12pm
Music Resource Center. Music has a way of bringing people together. At the Music Resource Center, we bring together great mentors, high quality equipment, and a safe, fun facility to provide lessons, dance, practice space, recording facilities, and so much more to area teens. As a 20+ year old nonprofit, the MRC has a proven track record of helping 6th-12th graders achieve their musical goals, while promoting positive relationships and personal growth.
